Surrealist body

Photography engages with sculpture and painting.

This ongoing photographic project explores the connection between my two artistic attractions: ancient sculpture and surrealist painting.

Two paintings by René Magritte, "Naked Torso in the Clouds" (1937) and "Black Magic" (1945), served as my initial source of inspiration. The images created to date refer to around ten of the artist’s works.

Transforming human bodies into sculpted torsos and, within the same image, depicting them in different ways offers greater freedom to develop the imagination.

Often the composition is simplified to highlight the color, which sometimes takes center stage. Color alone is also capable of conveying a message, such as downplaying the role of a character.

In some images, depicting this imagination elevates women in contrast to men, who are reduced to ordinary figures. The choice of materials reflects this intention, for example, the nobility of marble versus the austerity of stone.

The motif of clouds, so dear to René Magritte, is a major component. The shape of the clouds is constantly changing, this ephemeral nature thus facilitates the diversity of the compositions. Depending on the image, the clouds serve as a highlight for the bodies, a support for an element, or a vector of dynamics.

This project is also evolving toward a more original visual style, incorporating elements such as fluorescent colors. Ultimately, the dialogue between photography, sculpture, and painting is enriched. This conversation opens up new perspectives in the representation of the human body, breaking free from traditional conventions.

Since this project began, 24 months ago, multiple photographs have already been selected for group exhibitions and won awards in numerous international competitions.
